Asbestos found in church organ means church closure over Christmas

St James’s Church, Swansea, will close over the Christmas period due to asbestos being found in the church organ.

There was supposed to be a schedule of various Christmas services taking place, but these have all had to be cancelled due to the discovery of asbestos.

A spokesperson for the church released the following statement regarding the situation:-

“The vicar and church wardens have been advised by an experienced building surveyor that the church building should not be used pending further investigation.

Such investigation may well prove that the continued use of the church would have been safe.

However, this is a necessary precautionary measure at this stage of investigation.

The matter is being addressed urgently.”

Whilst the church is closed, Sunday services will be temporarily held in the church’s Parish Centre.
