American couple awarded compensation for asbestos in talcum powder

Banker and wife receive payout in successful court case against Johnson & Johnson

A couple from New Jersey, USA, have successfully won the first trial of it’s kind in the state against Johnson & Johnson for asbestos in talcum powder.

Stephen Lanzo and his wife Kendra received $37 million in damages after Stephen’s’ claims he developed cancer after years of using the talc.

Mr Lanzo, a Banker, claims he regularly used Johnson & Johnson products for more than 30 years,.

He believes that inhaling the powder caused his mesothelioma cancer affecting his lungs.

However, Johnson & Johnson have strongly denied that any of their talc products contain asbestos.

There are numerous other cases against Johnson & Johnson working their way through the American courts amid claims their talcum powder contains asbestos.

But not all are successful like this one.

For example, a recent case in California found in favour of Johnson & Johnson.

Connection between talc and ovarian cancer

There has been a suggested link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer in women.

As such, Johnson & Johnson and other companies are facing thousands more court cases and compensation claims.

Johnson & Johnson argue that they have conducted extensive testing to make sure their talcum powder products are not contaminated with asbestos.

However, lawyers acting on behalf of Mr & Mrs Lanzo say the company are holding back information from their customers about the risks of asbestos in their products.

Spokeswoman for Johnson & Johnson, Carol Goodrich, said, “While we are disappointed with this decision, the jury has further deliberations to conduct in this trial and we will reserve additional comment until the case is fully completed.”
