Mesothelioma cancer exclusively related to asbestos is expected to increase.

In time with world cancer day, doctors in the UK warn of asbestos related disease epidemic, specifically Mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that develops in the cells of the mesothelium which is the lining of the internal organs of the body. Mesothelioma is exclusively linked to the exposure and inhalation of asbestos.

The disease is predicted to peak in 2015-2020 and claim over 100 000 lives.  There is been a steady increase in asbestos related diseases, this is due to heavy exposure before the ban of asbestos in 2000 and before the risks were understood and heavily publicised. Today, there are many campaigns and training to protect against the exposure and dangers of asbestos.

Mesothelioma alone killed 2535 people in 2012, with men being most affected by the disease, 2126 males died in 2012 from asbestos related disease compared to 409 females.

It is said that men are worse affected due to them working in trades and high risk industrial occupations where they were highly exposed to the toxic asbestos substances.

Due to the nature of the disease it can be 20-50 years after exposure to asbestos that you see the symptoms, this can also be when the disease has reached an advanced stage.

Most affected and at risk were those involved in the maintenance of buildings and tradespeople who worked in buildings containing asbestos. Smokers are also more liable to the disease.

It is necessary that if you are likely to come into contact with asbestos to undertake training so you are properly and safely aware of what to do should you come into contact with asbestos, and so you understand the procedures should you be exposed to the fibres.

Although much of the damage has already been done, it is important that properties built before the year 2000 undertake asbestos surveys to ensure that we do not continue to put more people at risk.
